Reality Therapy, which is underpinned by an internal control psychology called Choice Theory, focuses on the current issues and conflicts affecting a person seeking treatment rather than on the issues that a person has experienced in the past, and it encourages that person, through therapy, to change any behaviour that may prevent him or her from finding a solution to those issues. It is based on the ideas developed by William Glasser that people experience mental distress when their basic psychological needs are not being met effectively.
Reality therapists hold that when a person in therapy can incorporate the behaviours, ideas, and methods developed through therapy in his or her life successfully, they will often be able to improve their relationships and experience a more fulfilling life.
